Nov 13th "Turn This World Around" Concert in Anaheim, CA

I'll be joined by our band at this benefit for the Raise 100 Free 100 campaign to rescue girls from forced prostitution. The campaign aims to raise $100,000 for International Justice Mission (IJM) to free 100 girls.

I'll be donating $1 to the campaign for every person that attends the concert in addition to a portion of CD sales. Admission is free.

This will be my last major show of the year since I'll be holing myself up in the studio to work on new songs. Come on out if you're in the area.

Aug 28th LA Show to Benefit Flood Victims

I'm doing an acoustic show on Sat. Aug 28th in L.A. I've decided to donate net proceeds to World Vision. Haiti has gotten most of the media attention this year and not enough people are hearing about the plight of disaster victims in Pakistan and China from their summer floods. World Vision plans on giving aid to over 300,000 people in the next few months.

People Whose Careers I'd like to Have

A lot of people ask me whose careers I'd like to pattern mine after. I watched American Idol this week as Harry Connick, Jr. was the mentor and it reminded me of how much I love his career. I was also glad that he was able to show off his awesome piano playing and music arranging skills, neither of which I come close to matching. However, I do love how he's been able to be a musician, composer, performer, do film, TV and Broadway. Barbra Streisand also comes to mind. She's done film, stage and directed. I have often thought about going behind the camera to direct at some point down the line.
I think first and foremost I want to be known as a songwriter and singer. TV host would come after that and then whatever acting roles get thrown into the mix in the future. I would love the opportunity to do more theater since my pipe dream is to be on Broadway. Composing music for a musical has given me a chance to be in touch with that world. Bottom line is that I've always wanted to be a multi-hyphenate artist and I'm blessed to have been able to do so much already. I look forward to whatever else is on the horizon.

Turning This World Around

I've finally had some time to process all the things I heard and discussed when I attended the Ideation Conference earlier this month. It was a gathering of humanitarians, charities, community and world changers. When I was listening to all the different speakers it spurred me on to think bigger about how I can impact the world. I co-wrote a song called "Turn This World Around" on Only Won's new CD, The Lyrical Engineer. I didn't realize how relevant and resonant this song would be. Art for art's sake is meaningless. Art that can inspire others has purpose. As much as I like being celebrated for my art, I would much rather be celebrated for the impact that my art has. Or for that matter, not be celebrated and just witness the impact. Being selfless and serving others is so contrary to how the entertainment industry is normally run. However, I believe if more people adopted that mentality, the world would be a better place.

I've also been attending many Asian American events in the past couple months. I'm reminded how important for those of us in the minority to put ourselves in positions of influence. We must represent. I'm often asked what it's like to be a triple minority in entertainment (a woman, an Asian and Christian). I am who God made me and I believe I've stood out because I am different. However it has taken a lot of effort to help others embrace "different". We've made great progress in film, TV, dance but the music world still has a ways to go. I'll admit it's much easier for me to be lazy and stay in my comfy bubble wearing my warm, fuzzy slippers. I need to take the slippers off and put my trailblazing shoes on. Is that statement too bold? Probably but progress can only be made when we are willing to boldly go where no man or woman has gone before.

"My Getaway" earthquake relief video

I put together this video set to my song "My Getaway" set to images of the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti. I had written it in a dark period of despair in my life yet the song is ultimately about hope looking forward. Net proceeds from this song will be donated to World Vision's relief efforts.

As a World Vision artist associate, I get direct updates about work on the ground in disaster affected areas. Unfortunately, there's probably some charity and earthquake coverage fatique and though the death toll is not as great in Chile, it's significant as is the damage. Many of the poor areas that World Vision has been working in for the past 30 years were hit hardest.

"World Vision began distributing hundreds of blankets and some water containers to Santiago's earthquake survivors over the weekend in preparation to start an extensive response in the hardest hit
areas south of the capital. Many of the communities where we already work--including Lota City, Temuco, Concepcion and other areas in the Bio region and the La Araucania region--were close to the devastating quake's epicenter."

Donating Sales to Haiti

It has been devastating to watch the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake and also knowing friends who survived the quake. I've been a World Vision artist associate for several years and they have several offices in Haiti. This estaliblished relief charity immediately leaped into action distributing supplies to thousands of displaced people there.

Chicago: Where Amazing Happens

Happy New Year! Just got back from a great trip to Chicago where I performed at an Asian Am conference. There was snow but more importantly lives were being changed by a message of amazing grace. Props to Dave Choi for challenging those of us who have been entrenched in the church and those who have rejected it to recognize God's gracious love. Nobody's perfect and nobody's unworthy of that love no matter how many mistakes someone makes.

Big thanks to my band, Jeff Ho (king of adapters), James Browne (the ampless guitar wonder), Jason Lingle (valiant effort in battling Only Won drums vs. beatbox) and to Matt Lonn for making my day with a hot dog run. Also special thanks to Vivian and the Grace Conference team. Shout out to our new friends, Lyricks, Manifest, DJ Zo, comedian PK, the Aklesia clothing gang, Parts Per Million and Christopher Yuan. Oh I can't forget about Only Won. It was the 1st major show we've done in tandem and we performed Cantonese Boy live for the 1st time. I'm so proud of him and look forward to more touring in 2010.
